The energy cycle Mureck won the World-Energy-Globe 2001! A jury chose this project out of 1200 international projects. The award shows that Styria earns worldwide respect concerning energy!
The SEEG (=South Styrian Cooperative for Energy and Protein Production) and the Local Heat Mureck run a bio-diesel construction and a bio mass heat plant in Mureck in order to supply the town with energy. Using bio energy, the CO2-emissions have been reduced by 70 % within three years in Mureck, a border town and climate-alliance-town. High-flying ambition is the 100% self supply with renewable energy. For this, many visitors from all over the word come and see the bioenergy-region Mureck.
The SEEG is considered as a pioneer in producing biodiesel from rapeseed- and used edible oil.
Thus, a first-class und utilisable energy source can be won out of the difficult waste edible oil. Since 2005 the production of biodiesel per year is about 10 million litres. The Local Heat Mureck supplies with its two bio mass boilers 250 objects (half of the town), so the adding value as well as the purchasing power stay within the bio energy region. Additionally, there is power and heat generation with a glycerin phase motor and with a vegetable oil motor- rapeseed processing with the biological cycle "from field to tank". About 600 local farmers are members of SEEG. They cultivate rapeseed and provide SEEG with it. SEEG uses it for producing biodiesel, DIN 51606 tested.
Each farmer receives his converted biodiesel (380 litres per 1000 kilos) and "colza cake" (621 kilos per 1000 kilos rapeseed) back. Colza cake is used as protein animal feed.
Used edible oil, following the cycle "from pan to tank"
Being the first and long time the only company worldwide, SEEG produces biodiesel from used edible oil. Communes and gastronomy business can become members of the association. Used edible oil is collected and converted into biodiesel (850 liters biodiesel from 1000 kilos used edible oil). Members get the diesel back for private use in their vehicles). More than 100 communes and the Grazer public transportation services take part in this cycle.
Heat generation für the town Mureck: "From wood to living room"
Local Heat Mureck Corporation is running a bio mass- heating station. The supply happens with two 2-megawatts central heating boilers. At the moment 250 objects join the system (12 kilometres length) and the power output is about 7 megawatts. That covers an amount of 85% of the whole energy demand.
Electricity generation "The green power from outlet"
Local Heat Mureck runs a block heat and power plant with 140 kW which generates power from biodiesel and rapeseed oil. The electric energy is inducted into the public network and the heat is inducted into the available local heat network of Mureck.
Biogas "Full supply with power and heat" of the region Mureck
For power requirement backup a biogas construction with electric power of 8.000 MWh and the same heat capacity is in operation. Resources are economic dung as well as renewables and by-products of biodiesel production.
High-flying ambition of the climate-alliance-town Mureck - 100% energy supply with fuel, power and heat from renewable energy - had been started and should be reached within few years. Five connected energy cycles guarantee the companies´ economic stability and are of great importance for the regions´ecology and social policy. The following advantages are reached when energy is supplied by regional resources and renewable energy is provided:
  • Environment protection (25 million kilos less CO2 per year)
  • Safety
  • Comfort
  • Added value
  • Quality of life

Thus, Murecks´ Energy cycle is a seminal and lasting energy concept. An imitation is necessary from an ecologic, economic and a social point of view.
